It is the question we get asked most often — and we'll answer it honestly, even when the answer is sometimes "off-the-shelf is fine." Understanding the difference is what helps you spend wisely.

The furniture market in South Africa has never been more crowded. Global retail chains, local flat-pack stores, and online imports all compete on one primary metric: price. But price at point of purchase is not the same as value over time. That distinction is where the bespoke argument begins.

The Real Cost Comparison

A quality bespoke dining table from our workshop might cost R18,000 to R35,000 depending on size, timber, and finish. A comparable retail piece might be R8,000. On paper, the retail option wins. But consider the lifespan:

Factor Bespoke (Chicco Thuli) Mass-Produced Retail

RepairabilityFully repairable, re-oilableDifficult to repair

Finish optionsUnlimitedFixed catalogue options
Cost per year (est.)R500–R1,200/yrR800–R1,600/yr

When you run the cost-per-year calculation, bespoke often wins over a 20-year window — especially as replacement cycles add up on retail furniture built to a price, not a standard.

"The bespoke price buys you the object. The retail price rents it."

What You Actually Get With Bespoke

Perfect fit

Your dining room is 3.8m wide with a 90cm traffic lane on each side. That means your table can be 2.0m long at most. The retail catalogue offers 1.6m or 2.4m. Neither is right. Bespoke gives you 2.0m — exactly.

Material integrity

Every piece we build uses solid timber throughout — not veneered MDF with a photographic wood-grain surface. Solid timber can be sanded, re-oiled, and refinished. A veneer chip is a permanent scar.

Your specification

Fabric colour, leg profile, table edge treatment, drawer configuration, handle style — everything is chosen by you. You don't adapt your vision to the catalogue; the piece is built to your vision.

When Off-the-Shelf Makes Sense

We believe in being honest with our clients. Bespoke is not always the right answer. If you're furnishing a rental property, a starter apartment, or a space you know you'll leave within three years — off-the-shelf is the sensible choice. The investment calculus only works in favour of bespoke when you intend to keep it.

Similarly, accessory pieces — side tables, small shelving units, or accent chairs in secondary rooms — may not warrant the bespoke premium unless the visual continuity across your space is a priority.

Our Recommendation

Invest bespoke in the anchors: dining table, main sofa suite, primary bed. These pieces define the character of your home and endure the most use. For everything else, make the decision based on how long you plan to stay and how much you care about the detail.

If you're uncertain, come in for a consultation. We'll tell you honestly whether bespoke makes sense for your specific situation — and if it doesn't, we'll tell you that too.
